Introduction

FOOD GROUPS

The food we eat can be divided into 5 main groups. We should choose a variety of foods from each of the first four groups each day. Foods in the fifth group (i.e. foods and drinks high in fat and/or sugar) should be eaten sparingly and make sure they don’t replace foods from the other groups. Food is the fuel for our body and we need the fuel for energy, to help our body grow and repair itself, and to keep warm.

However, sometimes fruits and vegetables are classified as two separate groups, making six groups in total. This healthy food pyramid shows these six food groups.

The main five food groups are:

  • Grain
  • Fruits and Vegetables
  • Dairy
  • Meat and Protein
  • Fats, Oil and Sweets
